Look for a private boat tour in Fajardo, or a boat rental in Fajardo with a captain, and you will find center consoles, yachts and catamarans that all reach the same reefs and cays off Puerto Rico's east coast. The water is the same. What changes is comfort, space and price, and the right pick depends on who is coming and what kind of day you want.
We run crewed private boat charters out of Fajardo on all three boat types, so this is the guide we give our own guests. If you already know what you want, our private boat charter in Fajardo page has every boat and a two-minute quote form.
Key facts: private boat tours from Fajardo

Start with five questions
- How many people are coming? Headcount narrows the choice fastest. Up to 12 fits a catamaran, 13 to 40 needs a large group boat, and over 40 we split the group across two boats, up to 80 guests in all.
- How much comfort does the day need? Shade, a bathroom and air conditioning are the real differences between the boats. Young kids, grandparents and long days make them matter more.
- Does anyone get seasick? Twin hulls ride flat. If someone in the group is nervous on the water, a catamaran is the easiest day.
- Where do you want to go? A private boat to Icacos or Palomino is a short run. A private boat to Culebra or Vieques is a longer crossing that needs a longer charter and good sea conditions.
- What is the budget? Charters are quoted per boat, not per person, so the boat type and the length of the day set the price.
The boats, honestly compared
Center console: the most affordable private boat

A center console is an open boat with the helm in the middle of the deck: quick, nimble and the most affordable way to have a private boat for the day. It reaches the same reefs, cays and beaches as the bigger boats.
The trade-offs are real. There is no shade, no bathroom and no air conditioning, and space is very limited. It suits a small group that is happy in the sun on a shorter day and would rather put the savings toward more time on the water.
Private yacht: comfort first

A yacht is the comfort-first middle option, and what most people mean by a yacht rental in Fajardo: air conditioning when the sun wins, a real bathroom on board, and cabins with beds and shade. It costs more than a center console, and for families, mixed ages and longer runs it is usually worth it.
It is also the boat that does birthday and bachelorette duty well: room to spread out, somewhere to change, and a cool cabin to retreat to between swims.
Private catamaran: the most stable ride

Catamarans are the flagship tier. Twin hulls sit flat on the water instead of leaning into every swell, which makes the ride the most stable and the easiest on seasick-prone guests. Our 47-foot power catamaran has an interior cabin, galley, head (the boat's bathroom) and freshwater shower, and the 42-foot sail catamaran runs the same waters under sail.
They take up to 12 guests and sit at the top of the price range, roughly twice a comparable powerboat charter. The space, shade and stability are what you are paying for. There are two catamarans, one of each, and each goes out with one group per date, so they are the first boats to go on busy days. The details are on our private catamaran charter page.
Large group boats: 13 to 40 guests
For 13 to 40 guests, a large group vessel carries the whole party on one boat. Over 40, we split you across two boats, up to 80 guests in all. That is how school groups, company outings and big wedding parties usually go out, with a captain and crew on each boat.
Side-by-side comparison
| Center console | Private yacht | Private catamaran | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $: the most affordable | $$: mid-range | $$$: the flagship tier |
| Group size | Small groups | Mid-size groups | Up to 12 guests |
| Shade | None, open boat | Plenty, inside and out | Shaded seating plus open deck |
| Bathroom | No | Yes | Yes, plus a freshwater shower |
| Air conditioning | No | Yes | Interior cabin |
| Ride | Quick and nimble | Comfortable on longer runs | Twin hulls, the most stable |
| Best for | Small groups chasing the lowest price | Families, mixed ages, celebrations | Seasick-prone guests and the full experience |
Groups of 13 to 40 go out on a large group boat, and parties over 40 on two boats. We match the vessels to your headcount and date.
Private boat tours to Icacos, Palomino, Culebra and Vieques from Fajardo
Where you want to go decides the length of the day, and the length decides which boat makes it comfortable. Every charter leaves from the marina in Fajardo, and the sea decides the range on any given day: the captain will always tell you honestly what is realistic. Our best snorkeling in Puerto Rico guide ranks the spots we take charters to.
Private boat to Cayo Icacos
A private boat to Icacos is the classic short charter from Fajardo: white sand, clear water and reef snorkeling in the cays just offshore. Four hours does one island properly, so a center console works well for a small group, and a yacht or catamaran makes it an easy family day. See our Icacos Island guide for what the island is like. Prefer a shared trip? Our Icacos afternoon snorkel tour runs daily from Fajardo.
Private boat to Palomino, Palominito and Cayo Lobos
The other cays off Fajardo pair naturally with Icacos. Six hours covers two islands comfortably, and eight opens up an island-hopping day, such as Icacos, Palomino and Palominito in one day.
Private boat to Culebra and Flamenco Beach
A private boat to Culebra from Fajardo is a longer crossing, so plan on a six- or eight-hour charter and good sea conditions. On the right day that can include an anchor off Flamenco Beach. For a day this long, shade and a bathroom matter, which makes a yacht, a catamaran or a large group boat the comfortable choice. If a shared trip suits you better, see our Culebra snorkeling excursion, or compare the options in our Flamenco Beach boat vs ferry guide.
Private boat to Vieques
A private boat to Vieques is also a longer crossing, best on a six- or eight-hour charter when conditions allow. Choose a boat with shade and a bathroom, and tell us what your group wants from the day so the captain can plan the stops.
How long to charter: 4, 6 or 8 hours
Charters run in four-, six- or eight-hour blocks. The rule of thumb from our crews: four hours is one island done properly, with snorkeling and beach time and no rushing. Six hours covers two islands comfortably. Eight hours opens up island-hopping, or the longer crossings to Culebra and Vieques.
Match the boat to the length too. Four hours in full sun on a center console is a good day. Eight hours usually goes better with shade and a bathroom on board.
What sets the price
Private boat charters in Fajardo are quoted per boat, not per person. Three things move the number: the boat type, the length of the day, and add-ons such as food and drink packages or scuba for certified and first-time divers.
Because the price is per boat, a fuller boat costs each person less. A group of eight on a yacht and a group of 40 on a large group boat split the bill very differently, so give your real headcount when you ask for a quote. Asking is free, and the quote tells you exactly what your group would pay.
Quick match by group
- Couple or small group on a budget: center console, four hours, a private boat to Icacos.
- Family with young kids or grandparents: yacht or catamaran, for shade and a bathroom.
- Someone prone to seasickness: catamaran, up to 12 guests.
- Bachelorette, birthday or anniversary: yacht or catamaran, with a food and drink package.
- Company outing, school group or wedding party: a large group boat for 13 to 40, or two boats for bigger parties.
- Culebra or Vieques on the list: a six- or eight-hour charter on a comfortable boat, weather permitting.
Still not sure? Pick “Not sure” for the boat and the length on our quote form, and we will match the boat to your group.
Questions worth asking before you book
Whoever you charter with, these five questions make quotes easy to compare:
- Is the boat crewed? Ours always are. Every charter comes with a captain and crew, and we do not rent bareboat (a boat without a captain, where you skipper it yourself).
- What is included? Ask about snorkel gear, flotation, food, drinks and parking. Ours include mask, snorkel, fins and flotation, guided snorkeling and free marina parking, with food and drink packages available.
- Is there shade and a bathroom on board? It is the biggest comfort difference between boats.
- What happens if the weather turns? Ask how reschedules work for your date.
- Is the quote per boat or per person, and for how many hours? It makes two quotes comparable.
